Investment Portfolio for a Community Foundation

Surveying the landscape for direct local investment and identifying potential deals

A small rural community foundation – a recognized investment innovator – was ready to move forward with direct investing in its community. The staff, board and community partners had completed extensive research and planning, including significant work to articulate the community values that would underlie all their investments.

I worked for the principal contractor to translate the foundation’s broad strategy into a menu of potential local deals. We turned to the foundation’s networks, and leveraged our own knowledge, ultimately finding small businesses, loan funds, public and private affordable housing projects, and agriculture operations that might provide good foundation investments.

The results were delivered in a well-organized written report that can serve foundation staff, both as a reference and as a communication tool with its board.

References to the principal contractor for this project, and to the foundation served, are available on request.
